Adhesive Second-Source Evaluation

Evaluating an alternative industrial adhesive takes more than comparing product data sheets. The adhesive must suit your materials, application process and service conditions—and its performance must be checked on the real assembly before approval. Glue Finder Technical Team can help you work through the key questions for a second-source evaluation.

01

Why a similar TDS does not prove equivalent performance

Two adhesives may show similar values on a technical data sheet (TDS) but behave differently in your application. Test results depend on factors such as the test method, substrates, surface preparation, cure conditions and bond-line thickness. A close match on paper is a reason to investigate—not proof that one adhesive can replace another. Do not assume a candidate is a drop-in replacement without testing it against your requirements.

02

What to compare

  • 01

    Current adhesive

Record the exact product name and model.

  • 02

    Substrates

Identify the materials being bonded, including coatings, finishes and surface condition.

  • 03

    Cure and production process

Note how the adhesive cures, and the actual time, temperature and handling conditions used in production.

  • 04

    Viscosity and application

Consider whether the material can be applied with your current dispensing or application method.

  • 05

    Bond-line thickness or gap

Record the typical and permitted gap, where relevant.

  • 06

    Operating environment

Include temperature range, chemical exposure, vibration, moisture and other service conditions.

  • 07

    Performance needs

Define the required strength, flexibility and service life, as well as the loads and movement the bond must withstand.

If some information is missing, record what is unknown. It is better to identify an open question than to assume the conditions are the same.

03

A simple evaluation flow

  1. 01

    Compare

Compare the current adhesive and candidate against the materials, application and service requirements. Review the test methods and conditions behind any data you use.

  2. 02

    Check process fit

Check whether the candidate’s cure requirements, working time, viscosity and application method fit your production process. Consider whether the process would need adjustment.

  3. 03

    Test

Test the candidate on the real assembly or a representative assembly. Use the intended substrates, surface preparation, application method, bond-line or gap, and cure conditions. Include relevant operating and service conditions in the test plan. A test on different materials or under different conditions may not predict performance in your application.

  4. 04

    Review

Compare the results with your defined requirements. Record the materials, preparation, process conditions, test methods and outcomes. Approve a change only when the evidence meets your requirements and the responsible people in your organisation accept the results.
